Atherton Marching Band Takes First At Lakeland Invitational
Congratualations to our marching band who braved the rain over the weekend to take first place in Flight V at the Lakeland Invitational Marching Band Competition. It was a great effort on the part of our students who rose above the elements to put on a great show. I'm proud of you all.

Solo And Ensemble Sign Up Time
An exciting event for band members is the District Solo and Ensemble Festival. It is an opportunity for students to perform on their instruments in small groups of one to eight members with or without a piano accompaniment. Events are played for a small audience and a judge. The performance is rated on a five-point scale by the adjudicator and written comments, tips and suggestions are given. Students earning either of the top two ratings will receive an official M.S.B.O.A. medal and ribbon.
The festival is to be held this year on Saturday, February 21, 2015. I will inform you of the site as information is made available. Students should plan to make individual arrangements to travel to the festival. Maps will be available when I receive them. Parents are welcome and usually enjoy attending these festivals to hear their children play.
Students are scheduled by computer with hundreds of other students from area schools. Performance time could be any time between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Early, middle and late times may be requested, but cannot be guaranteed.
Parents are responsible for the entry fee. Fees are $10.00 for a solo and $10.00 per person for an ensemble. You will be expected to pay for your student’s piano accompanist. Most charge $30 - $40; this is not an unreasonable amount.
Students who wish to participate will be required to attend after school individual 15 to 30 minute sessions with the instructor for the six weeks preceding solo and ensemble (one session per week). These sessions would start in January. Students failing to meet this requirement may not be given permission to perform at the festival. Students with regular private instructors are still required to fulfill this obligation.
The festival is a marvelous activity for our band students. If there are any questions, feel free to contact me at school.

Jerry Cutting
